EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY SOMETIME- SEEKING LOST FRIENDS
Looking for lost South Shoreites? Email caryn120@comcast.net and I will try to put you in contact. Note that sharing your story gives me permission to use your name & email address in the newsletter and the blog.
I already received a note from one of your readers. I would like “old” pictures from the 82nd street area from around the 50’s. Don Reisse
My name is Sarelle Fields married name Povitsky. I am looking for a girl by the name of Jan Fisher who graduated from Bowen possibly in 1967. I just sent an email to Helene Gingiss who was an old friend who had a reunion in Arizona.. I am also looking for an old boyfriend by the name of Ralph Oko. He graduated South Shore in 1963. I would love to know what happened to him. I am also looking for Helena Schrieber who graduated from O’Keefe Grammar School. She and I were close friends from O’Keefe until we graduated and went to different high schools. I hope that by putting out your feelers, we can find these people. I graduated South Shore in 1964 and I would love to hear from the graduates of that year.
I am SO delighted someone has the interest and energy to take up the task of creating a place for all South Shoreites to share. My parents and I absolutely loved living in South Shore. It’s nice to know there are - not just some - but many people who feel about South Shore as I. If our old South Shore still existed, I could easily be convinced to move back to Chicago…. yes, even from Alabama! Anne Funderburk Dinkins SSHS Class of ‘65
Gareth and Susan Quale are wondering if anyone has current information about Janet Walquist, our neighbor who lived at 7600 Crandon. I believe she was SSHS class of 1960 or thereabout. Thanks! Sue Quale
Does anyone have current email addresses for these three SSHS pilgrims? Jerome Chambless, Maynard (Noots) Thompson (both class of Jan ‘54) and Nancy (McCaslin) Whatever (June ‘56)? Larry Kilcran
My name is Edward Oppenheimer and I am a former Southsider 79th and Essex Avenue. I went to Myra Bradwell & South Shore. I have lost contact with everyone. The only one I am in contact with is Betsy Zellermayer my ex wife. I live in south Florida since 1963. I graduated from Bradwell in 1944. Ed Oppenheimer
This is Elsa Sommers Auerbach – Dixon Elementary School 1956 and South Shore summer of 1959 (Hirsch High for the first two years). Has anyone ever put together a reunion from Dixon Elementary School in Chatham for classes in the 1950″s? Many of my friends from Dixon moved away before high school graduation. Elsa and Mike Auerbach (Luella 1954 and Bowen 1958)
I noticed in your column that you mentioned the name “Shirley Hoff, Class of 48′ Reunion.” Although I did not go to South Shore, this young lady at one time, a long time ago, was a babysitter for me and my sister. Is there any way that I can get in touch with her? Robert Trodden
Gerald Lewis is writing a book on South Shore. He is looking for Reform, Conservative or Orthodox Jews who lived in South Shore and were members of the South Shore Jewish community from 1945-1970. Contact Gerald
It’s been fun finding and being found by others. Now I’m looking for anyone who knows how to reach Karen Weintraub, South Shore, ‘60. Joyce Klinenberg Glass, Bowen ‘61.

I am looking for my old flame, Lawrence Rudolph last residing in Maryland. Diane Winicour
My name is Jerry Kalwasinski. I lived in South Chicago most of my days as a young man at 84th and Mackinaw in the Mill Gate area of US Steel. I remember going to the Avalon Theater many times it was such a nice place inside. South Shore was really such a pleasant neighborhood in the 50’s and 60’s. I’m trying to find information on a tragic murder that happened in 1954 on Feb 9th. A young girl named Corrine Baldwin 16 was killed behind the old Walgreen’s at 7500 S. Exchange by a fellow that is still in prison. I have a number of newspaper clips on this and I’m still trying to locate more on the story. Thank you, Jerry Kalwasinski
In one of your recent Newsletters, you made reference to a restaurant owned by a/some SSHS grads. It is located somewhere in the greater Glenview (I think) area. I would like to contact them for a near future event. I live in Southern Calif. but the event is planned for the greater Niles area. Appreciate any help you can provide. Len Borok SSHS June 46.
Thanks for the mention of Andrea T. Eliscu, my sister. Andrea was Andrea Trock when we lived on 79th & Oglesby in the 50’s and 60’s. Rick Trock
My name is Arlene Pearson/Voll. I am a graduate of SS in January 1958. I have been reading the newsletter from my brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert Pearson and Nancy Currie (Pearson). It is so wonderful to have this connection after so many years. Arlene Pearson Voll
Send a shout out to Bob Levi who recently had hip surgery. boblevi@sbcglobal.net

I would love to reconnect with old friends from Faulkner School – Raechel Hall
The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think of myself as old. Upon seeing my reaction, she was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question, and I would ponder it, and let her know. Old Age, I decided, is a gift. I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body: the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my father or mother), but I don’t agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life or my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend.
To Ann who is planning a 50th reunion of Hyde Park High School. I was disappointed that there wasn’t a 50th reunion this year. Please contact me if you are REALLY planning a reunion. Richard Chroman (Dick)
There will be a 40th reunion of the class of 1969 on 7/25/09.
South Shore class of 1958
I am a ‘66 graduate of The Faulkner School for Girls (now closed), which was originally located at 4746 S Dorchester in Kenwood (next to Hyde Park). In 1959, the school moved to 7138 S Coles in South Shore. I would welcome contact from any Faulkner students (grads or former students who might have left for other schools). Rachael Hall, I don’t see a note the years you attended Faulkner. Hi to Rachael, Marta Lazar ‘68 and everyone. We just celebrated an all-class reunion at the end of June (2008) and plan another in 2013. The coordinator has been Barbara “Sammy” Samans ‘63.
I forgot to add to my earlier message that I remember you, Anne (Funderburk), from Penny Tri-Hi-Y. I was the only Faulkner girl in the club. Do you keep in touch with any of your SSHS classmates or Penny members? My best friend was Hollis Delaney (Bernstein) ‘67 who has lived in Oak Park for a long time. I also remember our club president, Karen Daly, and Priscilla Leutiger (spelling?), who belonged to my church at the time. In 2003, I re-met Sally Decker (Smith), who is a librarian in a Chicago suburb, but I can’t remember which one. I attended an ALA convention with my brother, Bruce E. Burg SSHS ‘64, who owns West Circle Books in Franklin, IL, which sells books to libraries (school, public, military, hospital etc). Sally looked exactly the same! I also remember Marion (can’t recall her last name), Annette Vanderveen, Patty & Nancy Vance. Alice Caspar and Clara Evans (Cooper) also friends from SSHS but can’t recall if they were Penny girls. I have many happy memories of our Tri-Hi-Y, still have my pin and a photo of Hollis, Alice, and me with our boyfriends at the “Snow Ball”, the winter dance. I haven’t seen Hollis in several years, but I just visited my friend, Chuck Kincaid SSHS ‘67, when I was in Chicago two weeks ago. It was great to see your name again, Anne. Louise, The Faulkner School for Girls ‘66
Where are Faulkner grads: Sara White, Jeannie Maurey (sp?), Janice
Marks?
will you add me to the mailing list for the newsletter. Thanks
Elsa I went to Dixon, graduated in 1958 and then went to South Shore, graduated in 1962. I plan to be at the class reunion in November. It is late here in Austin, TX and I will write more another time.
I’m replying to Louise Burgs post. I went to South Shore and managed to graduate in 1967. I read with great interest your comments on Penny Tri-Hy-Y.m almost all of those names rang a bell with me. I had a crush on Hollis and walked from Bryn Mawr to our homes with Nancy and Patty Vance. Alice was a close friend and I saw her at one of the reunions. She now lives in FL.
My sister Donna was a member of Of Penny. I think she may have been a former President.
Anyway, just wanted to thank you for the memories and hope all is well with you.
