My grandfather ran a small men’s store “Doran’s Haberdashery” in South Shore. I am not sure how long he was there, but the store was located just east of the Avalon Theatre, in the retail space with a bus in front of it in the illustration for “The Pied Piper of South Shore”. My mom always said the Avalon was her babysitter. As a young girl she would watch movies all day at the Avalon while her folks worked in the store. Her family also belonged to South Shore Country Club. She often remembers events that took place there.

Mom (nee Barbara Doran) left Chicago in the late 40s and moved to California. She did not return again until I pestered her to take me to her childhood home a few years ago. The trip was filled with memories and pleasant surprises, with just a few disappointments.
